One of the most reputable and dynamic trumpeters and crooners in the business, Brian Newman is perhaps best known as Lady Gaga’s go-to jazz player, having performed with her both in the studio and for ABC’s A Very Gaga Thanksgiving, NBC’s Today Show, and MTV’s Video Music Awards. Brian has similarly shared the stage with a diverse array of performers across multiple genres, highlighted by notable appearances with Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra Jr, Mark Murphy, Dierks Bentley and Megan Hilty. Brian’s throwback style also has Hollywood calling with film and television performances including HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He will perform at Henry A Liquor Bar in Hudson next Wednesday, November 20th, 8-10PM.
You’re known for being a jazz crooner but you’ve also done your fair share of Rock n Roll shows. What do you love about both styles of music and where do you find your heart lies? Why?
Some days I wake up and want to hear Thin Lizzy. Sometimes I want to hear Frank Sinatra. Toeing the line between the two worlds is what I truly enjoy, but the bottom line is that I love music and playing with great musicians is very important to me. Some of the greatest rock and metal guitar players are some of the best in the world at their instrument. All the classical guitarists that I knew in college had long hair, listened to Slayer and wanted to learn their instrument the best they could so they could rock. I wanted to learn my craft the same way and to get it to where I fit in no matter the style.
We hear you are Lady Gaga’s go to trumpeter. What’s it like playing with the world’s biggest pop star?
I appreciate that she is a real musician who plays piano extremely well and writes her own songs. When she shows up to our gigs, she knows the tunes cold and what key to sing them in. Playing with LG is always a great time.
What’s been one of your favorite shows to date?
One of my all-time favorite shows was performing with LG at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend in Carlisle, England. There were over 30,000 people in the audience and it was televised on the BBC all over the world. I had never felt that kind of adrenaline until that night.
If I were a genie and could grant you 3 wishes, what would they be?
1. X-ray Vision
2. My own old school supper club in New York City. Like the Copacabana or Billy Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe, with a dress code, live music, dinner and dancing.
3. 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible. Black with a white top and a white interior.
What’s playing on your Ipod now?
